Toby and her husband chose to not vaccinate their three children. It had absolutely nothing to do with celebrities on the television screaming at each other about how wrong or right vaccination is. It was a decision consistent with numerous other choices related to their family’s health. Toby wanted to have a home birth, she wanted to breastfeed, and she wanted to cook only natural, plant-based foods for her family. This was because of her own battles with chronic illness while growing up.
As Toby recalls, she was nursing her children and watching them grow, the last thing that ever crossed her mind was injecting them with substances like aluminum, formaldehyde, mercury, and human fetal DNA. She remembers the warnings on the vaccine packages that said it may cause anaphylactic shock or death.
Caring For Her Children
Taking care of her child’s health was now her full responsibility and not the responsibility of the doctor. Doing the most that she could, she made sure that the quality of their daily food was above all other standards. Every day she prepared meals made of organic whole grains, organic vegetables, beans, fruits, nuts, seeds, fish, and fermented foods. No sugar, red meat, dairy, or processed food were allowed in her kitchen. Her children were rarely ill and when they were she would treat them with herbs, acupuncture, or homeopathy. Many of her friends had views that opposed hers, allowing their children copious amounts of sugar and processed foods while treating their illnesses with medicines prescribed by the doctor.
In the fall of 1996, a fully vaccinated child in her son’s fourth grade class had been diagnosed with whooping cough. She felt very nervous. How could he get it if he was vaccinated, would it be spread to her children? Could she get in trouble for having not vaccinated her children, what would happen to her and her family in the big picture?
Shortly after, there was an epidemic in their town. Child after child, all immunized, caught whooping cough. Officials of the city started making plans to close the schools. Parents wanted questions answered, like shouldn’t the vaccines help protect the children, how could this happen?
The big question now is what happened to Toby’s non-vaccinated children? Nothing happened to them—they never contracted the disease. She believes this is because of the lifestyle in which she has raised her children.
What the Public is Missing Out On
The public news media says that whooping cough outbreaks in the United States are the product of parents not vaccinating their children. What they are missing out on as other potential sources are the multitude of adults who were never vaccinated in the first place, and the other adults and children whose immunity from this disease never took effect or have worn off. How can this problem be combated? Should the entire population start receiving booster shots?
Alternately, there are more and more adults who are questioning vaccines and their effectiveness, because many children who have been fully vaccinated are getting sick anyway. Parents read the inserts in the packages that warn of the awful side effects from the drugs, so it’s hard to blame them for saying no or thinking twice. Some say the best thing that can be done for the children is to take total charge of their health and strengthening their immune system through proper nutrition and active lifestyles. This does take time and effort but it will make all the difference.
