Alkalizing your body is a practice that is known well, especially in the realm of natural health and healthy diets. It is actually quite simple and may be accomplished by making a few changes to your diet.
What is alkalizing?
Alkalizing is based on a spectrum, and to understand it you have to learn about the two extremes. On one end it is alkalizing and the other end is acidic. There are also some substances that are neither acidic nor alkalizing, and these are known as neutral. Acidity and alkalinity are measured on the pH scale. This ranges from 0 to 14 and a pH of 7 or higher is alkalizing or basic. A pH that is less than 7 is acidic and a pH that is 7 is neutral.
What pH level should our bodies have?
The best living environment for our bodies is of the pH level of close to 7.4. This is just a slightly alkalizing state. 7.36 to 7.44 is an acceptable range for our bodies. This ensures that the blood acts effectively as a medium for oxygen and other vital nutrients. If the pH goes too far in either direction it can be harmful. Typically, due to the average American diet many individuals are overly acidic and are not aware or concerned of the importance of alkalizing. Balancing acidity and alkalizing is key.
How do we become overly acidic?
This happens with many different factors, not just diet. Our bodies naturally create acid and it needs to be neutralized even though most of the tissue in the body is alkaline in nature. Acidity occurs when we use our muscles, when we breathe, and when we digest certain foods.
Why is alkalizing important?
When your body has too many acidic foods and not enough alkalizing foods this can cause serious health consequences. The body will take what it needs from bones or other vital tissue. This damages and impairs the body’s ability to detoxify or repair and will cause a person to become more susceptible to disease and illnesses.
A body that is too acidic can cause many negative effects like acne, headaches, indigestion, joint pain, a weakened immune system, weakened nails and hair, trouble gaining weight, trouble losing weight, and allergies. More serious conditions can also be yeast and bacteria in the digestive tract and even cancer cells. Your, lungs, heart, liver, pancreas, colon, kidneys, and thyroid are all affected by your pH level.
Foods that Alkalize the Body
- Lemons- one of the most alkalizing foods and are a great way to start the day. Have them in a glass of lukewarm water.
- Leafy greens- this would be kale, spinach, swiss chard, and turnip greens. These are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals.
- Root veggies- radishes, rutabaga, beets, carrots, horseradish, and turnips.
- Garlic- also great for overall health, boosts the immune system, and is antibacterial and antifungal. Raw garlic is best.
- Avocados- these contain high amounts of essential vitamins, fatty acids, and amino acids.
All of these foods are easy to add into your existing diet and when mixed together these can make for a delicious salad or side dish to any meal.
